At a time when world leaders are making promises and decisions to step away from fossil fuels because climate science has shown we cannot burn our existing reserves (let alone drill for more), offshore oil and gas Operation Phakisa is pushing ever harder to get its hands on a local supply of gas. Shell must answer for how the harms done during this survey and any exploration drilling done hereafter are part of its energy transition plan to control global warming.

Dear Sir/Madam,

SHELL EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION SOUTH AFRICA – NOTIFICATION OF THE COMMENCEMENT OF A 3D SEISMIC SURVEY IN THE TRANSKEI EXPLORATION AREA OFF THE EAST COAST OF SOUTH AFRICA

Notice is hereby given that Shell Exploration and Production South Africa has appointed Shearwater GeoServices to commence with a three-dimensional (3D) seismic survey within its Transkei Exploration Area off the East Coast of South Africa from the earliest on 01 December 2021.

The survey will be undertaken under Exploration Right 12/3/252 and will cover an area of approximately 6 011 km2 located roughly between Port St Johns and Morgans Bay. The survey area is located more than 20 km from the coast at its closest point in water depths ranging between 700 and 3 000 m (refer to locality plan in Attachment A). It is anticipated that the seismic survey would take in the order of four to five months to complete, depending on weather and current conditions.

Under the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, a seismic survey vessel that is engaged in surveying is defined as a “vessel restricted in its ability to manoeuvre”, which requires that power- driven and sailing vessels give way to a vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre. Vessels engaged in fishing are kindly requested to, so far as possible, keep out of the way of the seismic operation. Furthermore, under the Marine Traffic Act of 1981, a seismic survey vessel and its seismic array is protected by a 500 m safety exclusion zone.

Capricorn Marine Environmental has been appointed to provide the Fisheries Liaison Officer (FLO), Marine Mammal Observers (MMO) and Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) services for the duration of the survey.   2. I would suggeat a total biocot of ALL Shell oil / petroleum products until they retract their intentions publically. This include notifying companies like Discovery that has agreements with Shell service stations useing cash-back enticements for using Shell!

  3. We don’t need fossil fuel production or products anymore.Rather change your focus to Green Energy production and infrastructure – more wind turbines, more solar farms and lay down more electrical charging points for
    e-cars and busses.Green energy is the (our) future ,it will create more sustainable jobs without the pollution of the air and the sea and save our natural environment and animals

  4. Shell are once again displaying their lack of environmental concern chasing a fuel technology that is so harmful to our world. We are trying to reduce gas emissions turn to other sources of energy contribute to to global warming reduction. Shell it appears are looking to grow their footprint ignoring the environment. Not only should we not support shell but turn to companies sponsored by shell like formula one and loop them in into the debate.

  5. Some years ago, Shell were the prime movers regarding fracking in the Karoo. Now they want to undertake this heinous act, in defiance of any sane rationality. They MUST be stopped ! So much for any social or community (including marine life) responsibility. We should boycott all Shell products … (I have done so for about 8 years and will continue to do so … AS FOR BARBARA CREECY, SHE HAS SOLD US DOWN THE RIVER … Why do we have politicians who flagrantly ignore climate change, deny the need for action and continue to betray our Country (what’s left of it !)

    • Agreed, Willem. My view is that Shell is arrogantly treating us like any other African country where they believe that we are too ignorant to question their motives.. Perhaps our government doesn’t question things (probably getting back-handers anyway) but we, as the people of South Africa should, and must do so ! We have to stop this raping of our resources; especially when focus should be shifting away from fossil fuels, not towards more reserves. Shell, BP and others have done untold damage to our Earth and environment and apart from throwing Dollars at the problem, they do nothing else ! The whole matter is driven by the mighty Dollar and to hell with the consequences to our Earth!

  50. There must come a time when we say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. It is time that we truly regard the planet and its resources as the life blood of human existence. The continuous destruction and degradation of this planet will soon lead to mans demise. Much has been done already in ensuring mans doom. Do we need to continue or save what we can. This blasting proposal will be the death of a beautiful part of the ocean. Are we just going to stand and watch Shell destroy this coastline which is a true gem of the South African coastline . Let’s stop this now.
