Moratorium on new offshore mining applications lifted
In June 2018, South African Minister of Mineral Resources, Gwede Mantashe, published a notice stating a restriction on the granting of new applications for technical co-operation permits, exploration rights and production rights for all of South Africa’s onshore and offshore petroleum areas.
In a surprise announcement, on 29 November 2018 the Mineral Resources Minister, Gwede Mantashe announced that the moratorium on gas and oil exploration licences implemented earlier in 2018 will be lifted. Drilling for oil exploration is expected to get under way early in 2019. This will allow exploration and production applications that are already in the system to be approved.
